Receiving a Purchase Order with Barcode Scanning

Barcode scanning lets you receive stock by scanning each item as you unpack it. Skumo increments the count for each scan, so you can work through a delivery quickly without manually entering numbers.

Requirements

Barcode scanning on receive is available for suppliers marked as pre-barcoded. This means the items from that supplier arrive with barcodes already on them (printed by the manufacturer or supplier).

You can set a supplier as pre-barcoded when creating or editing them in the Suppliers section.

Setting Up Missing Barcodes

When you open the receive screen for a pre-barcoded supplier, Skumo checks whether all items on the PO have a barcode recorded in Shopify. If any items are missing a barcode, a Missing Barcodes screen appears first.

For each item without a barcode, you can:

  • Enter the barcode — type or scan it in to save it for this item going forward
  • Skip — proceed without a barcode for that item (you'll receive it manually)

Once you've dealt with all missing barcodes, the scan screen opens.

Scanning Items

The scan screen shows a live input field waiting for a barcode. You can scan using:

  • A connected USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner
  • Your device's camera (tap the camera button to open it)

Each time you scan a barcode:

  • If the barcode matches an item on the PO, the received count for that item increases by one and you'll see a confirmation message
  • If the barcode matches an item that's already been fully received, you'll see an over-received warning — you can continue if the extra stock is intentional
  • If the barcode isn't recognised, you'll see an unknown barcode message — the scan is ignored and you can continue

You can scan continuously without needing to confirm between scans. The running totals on screen update in real time.

Finishing the Scan

When you've scanned everything, review the quantities on screen. You can adjust any count manually if needed.

Click Confirm Receipt to complete the receive. Skumo will move the scanned quantities from incoming to available stock in Shopify and update the PO status.

Scan-Only Mode

In Settings, you can enable require scan to receive for pre-barcoded suppliers. When this is turned on, the manual quantity entry option is hidden and staff must scan every item to complete the receipt. This is useful if you want to enforce accurate barcode-based stock counts on every delivery.

You can find this option under Settings → Purchase Orders → Receiving Behaviour.
